RESources in Coastal groundwater Under hydroclimatic Extremes

4 Work Packages

The RESCUE project focuses on enhancing water security by identifying and utilizing deep-coastal and offshore groundwater resources through four main work packages (WPs):

WP1: Technical

Goal: Develop innovative interpretations, modelling workflows, and simulations to evaluate potential freshwater resources.
Focus Areas: Mediterranean Adriatic Basin (Italy) and the UK.
Key Activities: Design activity plans, collect and process data, create 3D geological models, perform hydrogeological simulations, conduct fieldwork, and conceptualize results.
Deliverables: Technical project plan, scientific papers, yearly progress reports, and final report.

WP2: Economic

Goal: Provide guidelines for the sustainable use of groundwater.
Key Activities: Identify stakeholders, conduct cost-benefit analysis of freshwater sources (deep and shallow groundwater, desalination), and assess economic and environmental sustainability.
Deliverables: Stakeholders engagement plan, policy paper, yearly progress reports, and final report.

WP3: Social

Goal: Develop a communication and participation strategy for citizens and society regarding groundwater resources.
Key Activities: Create and execute a communication strategy, promote project through various media, engage public via podcasts, and participate in scientific conferences.
Deliverables: Dissemination and outreach plan, web platform, newsletters, stakeholders' consultation report, podcast episodes, yearly progress reports, and final report.

WP4: Legal

Goal: Establish legal framework guidelines for sustainable groundwater use.
Key Activities: Review existing regulations, develop best practices for Marine Spatial Planning (MSP), and analyze the legal implications of groundwater extraction.
Deliverables: Legal studies activity plan, policy paper on the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, report on existing regulations, proposed policy guidelines, yearly progress reports, and final report.
The project integrates technical, economic, social, and legal aspects to develop sustainable water management strategies, engage stakeholders, and inform public policies, ultimately addressing water scarcity in European coastal regions.
